Google: Elevating Safety as a Brand Promise Among Key Opinion Formers
The Challenge
Amid heightened political scrutiny and evolving technology regulation, Google faced mounting pressure from influential lawmakers over its safety practices. In a politically charged environment shaped by post-pandemic recovery, fiscal anxiety, and upcoming midterm elections, policymakers were actively debating how to regulate technology without stifling innovation.
In this climate, public narratives risked being shaped by misconceptions rather than facts.
Google needed to protect and propel its brand against mounting headwinds — rebuilding trust, reinforcing its position as a responsible technology leader, and demonstrating tangible net impact to decision-makers, experts, and advocates shaping the regulatory conversation.
The Strategic Insight
Perception among policymakers is shaped by clarity, visibility, and relevance.
Misconceptions about Google’s safety practices were not rooted in the absence of action, but in the absence of clear articulation.
To rebuild trust, Google needed to proactively own the safety narrative, translating complex cybersecurity infrastructure into accessible proof points that resonated at both national and local levels.
Safety could not be implied. It had to be demonstrated.
The Approach
We developed a targeted media and communications strategy to elevate “Safety” as a central brand promise and expand the Safer with Google initiative across high-influence environments.
Localization in Creative & Media
In an election year focused on pocketbook issues, we demonstrated tangible local impact — aligning messaging to both national priorities and home-voter agendas.
Channel Expansion with Trusted Partners
We broadened reach through print, digital out-of-home (DOOH), banners, newsletters, and homepage takeovers — securing presence in high-visibility, policymaker-heavy environments including DCA, Dulles Airport (IAD), and Union Station during a cybersecurity-focused burst.
Snackable, High-Frequency Messaging
Rather than outspending competitors, we leveraged KOF media habits to increase visibility through daily, high-impact placements that reinforced recall and clarity.
Consistency with Strategic Expansion
We maintained cohesive safety messaging while extending into social, audio, CTV, and new print opportunities to reinforce credibility at scale.
Campaign creative clearly articulated Google’s safety infrastructure — including advanced encryption, two-factor authentication, GDPR and CCPA compliance, threat detection, and user education — translating complex systems into accessible proof points.
